Selecting Personnel Protective Equipments for Hydrogen Peroxide Handling

In high concentration, hydrogen peroxide is a strong oxidizer and irritates skin and mucous membrane. Skin contact with hydrogen peroxide will cause a white aching mark and the person may feel a pain. In the worst case, eye contact may cause lost of eyesight.

The first thing we should do before handling hydrogen peroxide is to prepare appropriate personnel protective equipments. They will ensure our safety, although principally personnel protective equipments are the last protection. Applying hydrogen peroxide handling procedure properly should be our first priority.

As mention in my previous post about hydrogen peroxide
MSDS, basic personnel protective equipments required for hydrogen peroxide handling are protective eye goggles (safety glasses), rubber glove and face shield.

When selecting these personnel protective equipment, always refer to the standards and choose that are made of compatible material. For instance, eye goggles and face shields should conform to ANSI Z87-2003 standard and made of polycarbonate.

For rubber gloves, choose that are made of materials resistance to hydrogen peroxide, such as butyl rubber (Br), natural rubber (Nr), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE) and Viton (V). Always make sure that all safety tools we use are resistance to hydrogen peroxide.

Besides, do not forget to replace safety tool when it is damaged or when its shelf life has expired (refer to manufacturer recommendation). If we fail to do that, it may harm personnel safety.
